I’ve loved the whole beer garden culture ever since I moved to Munich—but after having a baby? I love it even more. Munich beer gardens are made for families. You’ve got space, shade, food and that unbeatable picnic-meets-Bavarian vibe. It’s one of our favourite ways to spend a sunny day.
If you’re looking for a family-friendly beer garden in Munich, let me introduce you to one of our absolute favourites: Hirschau.
🍺 Why Hirschau is the Perfect Family Friendly Beer Garden
Located in the northern part of the English Garden, Hirschau is a traditional Bavarian beer garden with a seriously impressive playground—probably the best I’ve seen at any beer garden in Munich.
We visited on a sunny weekend, and honestly, it ticked all the boxes:
✔️ Shady tables
✔️ Plenty of space
✔️ Classic Bavarian food
✔️ Laid-back atmosphere
✔️ And yep—slides, swings, and sand for days
🧒 Playground Paradise for Kids
The playground at this family-friendly beergarden is huge and filled with everything kids love: climbing frames, swings, slides, and even a digger area in the sand.
It’s tucked slightly away from the main seating area, but still close enough that you can sip your drink and watch your child have a time of their lives.
Bonus: there’s a fence around most of it, which gives you a bit of peace of mind if you have a speedy toddler on the run.
🧺 Bring Your Picnic, Grab a Drink
One of the best things about Munich beer gardens is that you can bring your own food. At Hirschau, we love to pack a few snacks from home, then grab a cold drink from the self-service counter. The menu also has lots of classic Bavarian options—Brezn, Schnitzel, Obazda—and kid-friendly meals too (our little one gave the fries a solid 10/10).
🏞️ More Than Just a Beer Garden
Another great thing is, after your meal you can walk around the English Garden. Maybe even stop by the Eisbach surfers or let the kids run around and watch ducks waddling in the stream.
