If you’re looking for a day trip from Munich that feels like a real escape, Königssee is the one. Just two hours away, this lake is so clear and green it almost looks unreal. Surrounded by huge Alpine peaks, it’s the kind of place where both parents and kids can slow down, play, and just enjoy being outside together.
Getting There from Munich
🚗 By car: . You can get there in about 2 hours, and having the car gives you flexibility
🚆 By train & bus: Totally doable! Train to Berchtesgaden and then hop on the RVO bus to the lake. It takes longer, but if your kids love trains and buses, that can be part of the adventure too.
On the Lake
This is where Königssee really shines.
- The boat ride: Super calm, stroller-friendly (fold or keep as is if boat is not too crowded). It goes to St. Bartholomä or all the way to Salet. Tickets are €29 return for adults (kids under 6 ride free).
- Rowboats: If you want to explore at your own pace, you can rent a rowboat (fits 2–4 people). It’s a fun way to find your own little spot for a picnic or even a swim.
Food & Breaks
There are a few small cafés and shops right near the lake. We grabbed a coffee and snack before the boat ride. But honestly, packing your own picnic is a win here — there are plenty of quiet corners around the lake where you can spread out and enjoy the view without rushing.
Why We Loved It
Königssee doesn’t feel like “just another lake.” It feels like stepping into a storybook — mountains rising up all around, water so clear you can see the bottom, and this peaceful calm that’s rare on other lakes around. So definitely a big win in our book! Plus the water was surprisingly not so cold and actually a very comfortable temperature. On top of that, quite shallow close to the shore which is perfect for little ones!
