If you’ve ever wished Munich had a little more of Berlin’s artsy edge, you’ll love Bahnwärter Thiel. Hidden away in Sendling, this spot feels like you’ve stepped into a completely different city with its graffiti-covered walls, old U-Bahn trains and buses turned into creative spaces, and a buzzing cultural scene. It’s raw, colorful, and full of surprises, making it a fun place to explore as a family.
We went on a sunny weekend afternoon and just walking around, checking out the cute little cafe’s and of course, the art.
What Makes Bahnwärter Thiel Special
- Old Trains & Buses 🚋
Kids (and adults) will be fascinated by the real U-Bahn cars and buses scattered around the space. Some have been turned into workshops, studios, or cafe’s. - Street Art Everywhere 🎨
Bahnwärter Thiel is one of the rare places in Munich where graffiti is not only allowed but celebrated. Every wall is covered in colorful designs, murals, and creative experiments. It feels like an open-air art gallery, and there’s always something new to spot. - Cafés & Outdoor Seating ☕🌿
Families can grab coffee, snacks, or even a drink in the beer garden-style area. The outdoor seating makes it really easy with kids — there’s space to move around and a relaxed, welcoming vibe. - Live Music & Events 🎶
On many evenings, Bahnwärter Thiel transforms into an event space with live bands, DJs, and cultural performances. Daytimes are usually quieter and more family-friendly, but you might still catch a musician practicing or an artist at work.
Visiting with Kids
We found Bahnwärter Thiel quite kid-friendly, especially during the day. There’s so much for little ones to look at — the trains, buses, and art.
👉 Tip: Go during the day or early evening for the most family-friendly vibe. Nights are more geared toward adults with concerts, parties, and nightlife.
