Family Hike to Breitenberghütte – A Scenic Mountain Trail Near Munich
With herds of cows, sunshine, changing leaves and breathtaking mountain views–this hike near Munich to Breitenberghütte is still one of our family’s favourite escapes. Every time we’re up in the mountains we ask ourselves: why aren’t we here every day? 😅
If you’re craving that fresh alpine air, here’s a full guide to make this sweet spot happen with your little ones.
📍 The Basics
- Destination: Breitenberghütte (elevation approx. 1,050 m) near Brannenburg in the Bavarian Alps.
- Difficulty: Medium — the path gets steeper and rockier toward the end, so it’s not suitable for strollers or Anhänger.
- Family tip: We spotted families using a slightly easier alternative route–worth asking locally if you want a gentler track.
- Getting there:
- By car – park at Wanderparkplatz St. Margarethen (check signage locally).
- By train – take the train from Munich to Brannenburg, then hike from the station. Our ride took about 1 hour.
- Here’s a better route we found if you want to avoid the steep incline at the end: https://www.komoot.com/smarttour/1977444?ref=itd
- Opening & rating: The hut is open all year, and many route-databases list it as “medium” difficulty.
What to Expect from the Hike
From meadow to mountain ridge, this trail leads you into beautiful alpine scenery. The altitude gives you sweeping views of the Bavarian Alps
Yes, the hike is “medium,” but you don’t have to be a pro to enjoy it. Here’s some things we loved about the hike:
- Cows and alpine scenes.
- A clear path for much of the way so kids can walk alongside you.
- The final section being a little steeper means a good snack break at the hut is richly deserved!
- Small playground at the top for kids to enjoy while you sip on your drink.
Family Checklist: What to Bring & What to Know
- Footwear: Comfortable hiking shoes with good grip (especially the last bit gets rocky).
- Clothing: Layers (mountain weather changes fast), a hat, and some sun protection.
- Snacks & hydration: While the hut has provisions, bring water and some snack backup.
- Weather (& alternative): If clouds roll in, the views may hide–but the hike is still lovely.
- Take your time: With kids, aim for a slower pace. Let them explore stones, plants, and views.
