Spending a day at the Zoo

Spanning over 40 hectares, the zoo combines the charm of a nature reserve with a vast array of exotic and native wildlife, creating an immersive experience that tries to showcase animals in their natural habitat. The Zoo is pretty extensive with an aquarium and a selection of local and exotic animals.

Apart from just roaming around, you can also attend many of the talks the Zoo offers on the various animals there or see feeding sessions of crocodiles, penguins and more – you can view the schedule here.

Fun fact: You can visit the Zoo for free on your birthday! Just remember to bring along your ID

There are also 2 playgrounds and cafe’s and a beer garden at the Zoo, so you can easily spend half a day at the Zoo. We loved how the Zoo has structured their 2 playgrounds! First of all, they’re quite big with activities aimed at kids of all ages + they have cafe’s right next to the playgrounds so you can enjoy a bite to eat while your kids play! Just a tip: we had lunch at the beer garden next to the adventure playground and absolutely loved the schnitzel!

If you don’t want to bring along your stroller or have some luggage with you, you can rent their handcarts either at the Isar entrance or Flamingo entrance of the zoo for 5.00€. (remember to bring your photo ID for the rental)

There’s also a kinderland where there’s a cute little vintage train which and candy stand – our toddler absolutely loved the train!

By the way, The Zoo is also one of the many outdoor places where you can host a birthday party for your kids!

Petting Zoo

One of our favourite parts was definitely the Hellabrunn’s petting zoo areas at the Isar entrance and the Muehlendorf! You’ll find the cutest little goats there to pet!

Guided Tours

If you want an informational experience, you can book a guided tour with the zoo! A zoo guide will lead you through Hellabrunner’s animal world for an hour and a half with exciting stories and facts – You can book the tours here
