Easy Family Hike at Tegernsee: Neureuth with Kids

Looking for an easy, family-friendly hike close to Munich? We recently spent a beautiful day hiking up to Berggasthof Neureuth at Tegernsee — and it was honestly the perfect little adventure with our toddler! Only about an hour’s train ride from Munich, this hike has everything you want: an easy-to-follow path, stunning mountain and lake views, and a cozy restaurant at the top that’s super welcoming for families.

Here’s everything you need to know if you want to plan your own trip:

The Route

The classic route up to Neureuth starts from Tegernsee train station — so it’s super easy to reach even if you don’t want to drive.

  • Distance: approx. 4 kilometers
  • Elevation gain: about 400 meters
  • Duration: around 1.5 hours up, and 1 hour down

The path is wide, gravelled, and gradually uphill – ideal if you have a good Thule or other hiking stroller. You’ll pass through beautiful forest sections and have gorgeous glimpses of the lake as you climb higher. It’s one of those hikes that feels rewarding but is still totally doable with little kids.

We actually chose a slightly longer forest route, which was super beautiful but not stroller-friendly — so if you’re planning to bring a stroller, definitely stick to the main route described on Servus Tegernsee.

Our toddler loved walking parts of it herself, especially through the shady forest areas. We also had the carrier with us, which was a lifesaver once her legs got tired (and also made the steeper parts easier for all of us!).

When you reach the top, you’re rewarded with absolutely incredible panoramic views over Tegernsee lake and the surrounding mountains. It’s such a beautiful spot — you can even see as far as Munich on a clear day!

And best of all: there’s the Berggasthof Neureuth, a cozy mountain inn where you can refuel with Bavarian classics like Kaiserschmarrn, pretzels, and hearty soups. 🍽️

If you’re hiking with kids, the restaurant is super family-friendly:

  • High chairs available
  • Baby changing facilities in the restrooms
  • Lots of outdoor seating with space for little ones to move around

You can either sit inside the traditional inn or outside on the large terrace to enjoy the views while you eat.

A Few Tips Before You Go

  • Parking: If you’re driving, there’s parking available at Tegernsee station or nearby (but it can fill up fast on sunny weekends!).
  • Start early: Especially on weekends and holidays — it’s a popular trail and gets busy by midday.
  • What to bring: A carrier if you’re planning to do the forest route. Sunscreen and hats are also important — parts of the path are exposed.
  • Public transport: Easy option too — you can take the train from Munich to Tegernsee and walk straight from the station.
  • Season: Best from spring to autumn. In winter, the trail can be icy or snowy and might require proper equipment.

We’re so excited to go on more hikes as the weather warms up! Open to any and all suggestions from you all. If you’re looking for more adventures in the Alps, check out our previous recommendations here.
